Starting At Union

BU opens their regular season schedule tonight at Union College. The Dutchman are not projected to be quite the team they were a few years back when they took down Minnesota in the National Championship game, but they will still be a tough opener.

Last night, Union kicked off their season with a 1-1 tie against Sacred Heart at home. The Dutchman were slotted to finish sixth in both the ECAC coaches poll and media poll.

Scouting the Dutchman
Union lost their starting goalie Colin Stevens and leading scorer Daniel Champini (this sounds familiar) from a year ago. Mike Vecchione is back, through. The junior from Saugus, Massachusetts racked up 50 points a year ago, with 19 goals and 31 assists in 39 games. Vecchione didn't take long to find the score sheet this season, as he posted an assist on freshman Cole Maier goal last night vs SHU.

Alex Sakellaropoulos got the start in net against Sacred Heart. He made 17 saves on 18 shots in the 65 minute game. Last year in a backup roll to Stevens, he saw action in 14 games and held a 3-3-2 record with an .894 save percentage and 3.07 goals against average. Union's other goalie this year is freshman Jake Kupsky, a San Jose draft pick.

Other Players to Watch
Matt Wilkins, Spencer Foo, Jeff Taylor, Sebastien Gingras.

The Last Time They Met
Union visited Agganis last season in early January. BU was without Jack Eichel and played to a 3-3 tie. AJ Greer, Nick Olsson and Evan Rodrigues scored the Terrier goals. Sakellaropoulos was in net for Union that night, making 33 saves on 36 shots.

Notes
- Brandon Fortunato and Nick Roberto will both be held of the game for disciplinary issues. Nothing major, just a team rules violation.

- No word on the starting goalie, but I would assume it's Maguire.
